Financial Aid Steps

Financial Aid can be an easy, but very overwhelming process. Just follow these steps to ensure everything is completed and always follow up with the college to ensure they have received the correct information. Make sure to save all usernames and passwords as you’ll need these important items every year you attend college!

 

 

 

Step 1

Register for FSA ID: www.fsaid.ed.gov

  • Both student and 1 parent need a FSA ID
  • Serves as your online signature for the FAFSA
  • Use your name exactly how it appears on your social security card
  • Be very careful to save your username and password as you’ll need it every year
    • Only 1 FSA ID can be created per person

 

*If student does not have a Social Security number, please skip this step and apply for the California Dream Act Application: https://dream.csac.ca.gov

    • Instructions are on the back page

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2

Submit your FAFSA: www.fafsa.gov

  • FAFSA application opens on October 1 and Cal Grant deadline is March 2.
    • You must submit your FAFSA for college every year.  
  • Be sure to submit the correct year FAFSA: 2018-2019
  • Will use your 2016 Tax information
  • If dependent, both student and parent must provide information and sign the application with your FSA ID.
  • If independent, just the student must provide information and sign the application using your FSA ID.
  • If parent does not have a Social Security Number, you must enter all zeros on the social security question, print out the signature page to sign, and send it via Certified Mail to the address listed.

 

*If student does not have a Social Security number they should submit the California Dream Act Application: https://dream.csac.ca.gov on the back page

 

Step 3

Create WebGrants 4 Students Account: https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov

  • Allows you to manage your Cal Grants or Chafee Awards.
  • Please allow 2 weeks after you submit your FAFSA for your account to be updated.

 

Follow-up

  • Call College Financial Aid office to ensure they have all required documents.
    • Some students are selected for “Verification” and the college will need specific items, such as tax transcript or forms. These should be listed on the college portal.
  • Receive Award Letter (breakdown of cost and awards)
  • Accept/Decline awards and/or loans
