e3 Civic High is excited to host the award winning global author and speaker, Dr. Yong Zhao, in the Shiley Special Events Suite of the San Diego Central Library on the evening of October 9, 2018, from 5:30-7 pm. Dr. Zhao is a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of Kansas, and his works focus on the implications of globalization and technology on education. One of the foundational ideas he discusses is how recent education reforms, such as college readiness or efforts to address problems such as achievement gaps, are still based on a system that perpetuates existing societal structures which favor the elite and a single path to success. He believes that a paradigm shift is needed in order to achieve true social mobility and change. Dr. Zhao has published over 100 articles and 30 books, including Counting What Counts: Reframing Education Outcomes(2016), Never Send a Human to Do a Machine’s Job: Correcting Top 5 Ed Tech Mistakes (2015), Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dragon: Why China has the Best (and Worst) Education System in the World (2014), Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization (2009) and World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students (2012).
